Monday! The beginning of a new work week! And garbage pickup day.
We used to haul our cans down to the side of the pavement and sit them any old way. When the new trucks were automated, cans had to be lined up exactly as instructed....open side to the road. Everything was to be automatic...cans picked up, dumped in the truck bed, and both employees sitting inside the truck. I, not being privy to such information, don't know what's happening, but most times someone still gets out of the truck and dumps the can.
I had to run to the bank this morning and noticed all the green cans sitting neatly by the road, waiting to be emptied. I've never noticed that before. Or maybe the garbage man is just really late and that's why they're all still there. House after house, green can after green can. I was surprised to see how many were overflowing, and the lids not closed. I wonder about things like that. Aren't they afraid of dogs dumping the mess all over? Me...I like a nice neat can, fully closed, liner intact.
I won't put raw meat in my garbage can. It's a respect thing. The smell of raw, rotting meat isn't a good thing, Martha. I zap the meat, or the Styrofoam containers, in the microwave. :) It only takes a second, and the garbage man doesn't have to smell it. He never even knows what I saved him from. It's the least I can do.
How much thought do we give to the garbage men?
.........and that's all I have to say about that.

I'm with you.... I don't think many people ever think of the people who pick up our garbage unless a can doesn't get emptied as expected. I've often thought of putting out a thank you card with a tip in it, but unfortunately for the garbage man I seem to only think of it when I'm broke and without a 'thank you' card on hand. But I may still get it done.
I think most of us don't even think about it.....I mean, how stinky a job that is. We just take it for granted that trash is picked up on a certain day and that's it! Thanks for pointing this out to me cause I haven't given it a lot of thought. Living here at the condo, they have a big truck that lifts the dumpster right up and empties it into the truck. A bit different than getting out and emptying each can. I'm going to try to be more patient the next time that I am following behind one of those big trash trucks, stopping for each house and not being able to pass it by.
If nothing else, you have really made me think about this. Good post!
Very good post! I heard about a woman who always gave lemonade to the garbage man in summer, and hot coco in winter....that was before the truck, when the garbage man came into your yard....I always thought how nice!
Lets hear it for the "Garbage Man"!!!! Sue
I would have never thought to do that. That's a great idea..Except I rarely have meat in the house but when I do, great idea. My husband always always put a case of beer out at Christmas time. I have no idea if they drank it or not but it always disappeared. Those darn teenagers...
At our house we "save money" by Raymon, my hubby, taking the garbage to the dump himself. Its a "why should I pay someone else to pick up the garbage when I can haul it off myself".
So we have this old truck that sits in the driveway taking up space. It never moves except to take the garbage to the dump. We pay for the license and insurance and the gas to save the $15-$20 a month we would pay the garbage company.
It must be a guy thing. Men are strange sometimes.
